Day 10 of 30

The Gift of Today

From the Peace in Chaos devotional series

"Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof."

— Matthew 6:34

Reflection

No paragraph today. Just three questions to sit with — slowly, in order, with at least thirty seconds between each. Do not rush to answer in words. Let the question land in your body and notice what comes up. 1. What rehearsed conversation has been playing in my head today that has not actually happened yet? 2. What is the worst thing I am imagining for tomorrow — and how many of yesterday's "worst things" actually came true? 3. If God genuinely meant only today, what would I lay down to walk through the next twelve hours unburdened? Jesus did not say tomorrow is unimportant. He said it is not yours yet. Most of us are paying interest on a debt the future has not even charged us.

Prayer

Sit with question three. Do not say "Amen." That is the prayer.

Peace Challenge

Before bed tonight, write down everything you were anxious about regarding tomorrow when you woke up this morning. Tomorrow night, look back at that list and circle anything that actually happened. Keep the list for a week. Most people are stunned by what they see.

How to Use Today's Devotional

Begin by reading the Scripture passage slowly, then read the reflection as a prompt rather than as a replacement for the biblical text. The goal of this series is to help you practice peace in ordinary life: paying attention to God, naming what is heavy, praying honestly, and taking one faithful step.

If you have time, copy one phrase from the verse and carry it with you through the day. Return to the prayer in the evening and notice what changed in your thoughts, conversations, or reactions. Small repeated practices often shape the heart more deeply than a single intense moment.

For wider context, open the passage in the Bible reader, compare translations, and read the surrounding chapter. You can also continue with the next day in this devotional or browse Bible verses about peace.
