Prayer for Forgiveness

Receiving God's forgiveness and extending it to others.

A complete prayer for forgiveness

This prayer follows the biblical 6-phase pattern. Pray it word-for-word as written, adapt it to your situation, or use it as a model for writing your own.

Heavenly Father, I come before Your throne of grace with reverence and faith.

Thanksgiving

Thank You, Lord, for forgiving me completely — not partly, not almost, but fully. Thank You for the freedom that comes from Your grace.

Declaration

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9)

Petitions

Lord, help me to forgive those who have hurt me. Remove the bitterness from my heart and replace it with Your compassion and understanding.

Praying for Others

I pray for those who have wronged me — not about them, but for them. Help them, heal them, and draw them closer to You.

Lord, give me a praying spirit — not just a praying mouth, but a spirit that walks in constant communion with You. Consecrate me. Search my heart. I receive everything You have for me. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.

Why this prayer follows this structure

The pattern above isn't arbitrary — it mirrors what Jesus taught and the apostles modeled. Thanksgiving opens prayer the way Psalm 100:4 instructs ("enter his courts with praise"). Declaration grounds the prayer in God's Word, because faith comes by hearing (Romans 10:17). Petitions brings the specific request with confidence (Mark 11:24 — "believe that ye receive"). Praying for Others closes by extending what we've received outward (Matthew 5:44).

Following the pattern doesn't make the prayer "work better" in some mechanical sense — it keeps the prayer from collapsing into pure self-focus, which is the most common failure mode of unstructured prayer.
