Prayer for Forgiveness

Receiving God's forgiveness and extending it to others.

A complete prayer for forgiveness

This prayer follows the biblical 6-phase pattern. Pray it word-for-word as written, adapt it to your situation, or use it as a model for writing your own.

Heavenly Father, I come before Your throne of grace with reverence and faith.

Thanksgiving

Thank You, Lord, for forgiving me completely — not partly, not almost, but fully. Thank You for the freedom that comes from Your grace.

Declaration

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9)

Petitions

Lord, help me to forgive those who have hurt me. Remove the bitterness from my heart and replace it with Your compassion and understanding.

Praying for Others

I pray for those who have wronged me — not about them, but for them. Help them, heal them, and draw them closer to You.

Lord, give me a praying spirit — not just a praying mouth, but a spirit that walks in constant communion with You. Consecrate me. Search my heart. I receive everything You have for me. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.

Why this structure fits a prayer for forgiveness

This prayer deliberately receives before it extends: the Thanksgiving and Declaration phases dwell on what you have been forgiven, because the Bible's whole case for forgiving ("even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you") runs in that direction. Only then do the Petitions turn to the hard part — releasing a specific debt — and the closing prayer for the person who hurt you, which Jesus prescribed precisely because it is the step feelings refuse to take on their own.

Make this prayer your own

Forgiveness usually has a name attached. The prayer generator lets you bring that name into each phase privately, in your own words.

Expect to pray this more than once — repetition is the practice, not a failure.
